FTCE Professional Education Practice Exam

The correct answer is rooted in the concept of intrinsic motivation, which refers to the internal drive that compels an individual to engage in an activity for its own sake, rather than for some separable consequence. When a student engages in an activity and derives satisfaction or pleasure from it, this is a clear reflection of intrinsic motivation.

Self-praise is a form of self-affirmation, where a student acknowledges their own achievements or efforts. This internal recognition can enhance a student's self-esteem and reinforce their motivation to continue striving for success. When students feel a sense of accomplishment from within, it fosters a greater passion for learning and a willingness to tackle challenges independently. Essentially, self-praise cultivates a powerful internal dialogue that supports the idea that they possess the ability to succeed based on their own efforts.

In contrast, factors like parental encouragement, teacher feedback, or peer competition represent external motivators. These can influence a student's attitude and performance but do not stem from the student’s own internal rewards or satisfaction. Understanding the difference between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation is vital for educators as it can guide the development of more effective teaching strategies aimed at fostering a love for learning within students.
